summer playlist | 1256 miles

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

1,256 miles is the exact distance from my house in Denver to my new home in Portland. Jevan and I did that drive twice over the course of the summer and these were the songs that were on heavy repeat, at least on my end. Jevan had his own mix too. Whether in a car, in my office or just playing on my iphone I never grew tired of these songs. So they became my summer mix. I hope you enjoy.

Thanks so much to everyone who participated, listened, downloaded and enjoyed the summer playlists. I’ll be sure to do this again. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend whatever it is you do. We are off to Vancouver for the holiday.

You can check out all eight summer mixes here.

summer playlist : great warmth of intensity

Friday, August 27th, 2010

This week’s music post is by one of my favorite Coloradan’s. Elbee, LB, Betts, Butts, Butters, Buttress or as most know her, Lesley. With so many nicknames, you can’t help but think she’s well loved. And loved, she is. Guys want her. Girls want to be her. And if that’s not enough, Lesley and her a few of her gal pals are the instigators of 30 days of awesome. An entertaining, witty and always awesome account of the antics of four 20-somethings for 30 straight days. With one goal in mind, who can be more awesome.

As for the mix, it’s not to be missed. There are some old favorites that will make you smile and some new to me songs too. I think you’ll enjoy as summer is winding to a close. What are you up to this weekend? We have a wedding reception tonight. That’s right, no wedding, just the party. Remember Sam and Meghan who eloped earlier this spring? They are officially celebrating with friends and family tonight. And the rest of the weekend? I’m sure we’ll be off exploring the city too.

final summer getaway

Is the summer really nearing it’s end? I simultaneously hate and love this time. Excited for cooler weather and the change that fall brings but sad to see summer go. To combat that, Rachel over at Black Eiffel put together an end of summer inspired mix. It’s perfect for that last little taste of summer. You know, the time when the long hot days turn into cooler nights. And those last few weekend getaways before the weather turns. She picked some of my all time favorites too. Hello Beach House and Tallest Man On Earth.

If you are on the hunt for more music, Rachel posts regular Music Monday inspiration. And if design is more your thing, her blog will have you coming back for more and more. She was also featured in the September issue of Martha Stewart Living 100 Great Finds the home. Congrats!

summer playlist : sunshine + raindrops

From what I’ve heard the NW weather has been a bit unpredictable this summer. One minute it’s hot and sunny and has everyone excited for summer and then just as soon as you get excited to enjoy the heat and sunshine, it quickly reverts back to springlike conditions. Rain. I’ve kept a close eye on the weather, because I won’t lie, I’m a little nervous about all this dreary business.

This week’s summer mix is by Chelsea of the famed {frolic} blog. She’s a Portlander and I can’t help but think these conditions might have influenced her mix. In case you don’t already know, Chelsea has so many things going for her. She has the blog, {frolic}, that is a regular source of inspiration for me. She has the floral and prop styling gig, she has a street style blog, urban weeds, she’s co-hosting Little Winter, and she has an inspiring tumblr, Time for Tea. In between her summer vacation and catching up from said vacation she put together a summer mix for us. After writing all that, I feel like one of those people adding yet another thing to her plate. But she kindly obliged and sunshine + raindrops has been on repeat in my house since it arrived in my inbox earlier this week. I hope you all enjoy the mix as much as I am. Have yourselves a wonderful weekend my friends. It’s going to be lots of packing around these parts. Thanks again Chelsea!

I can’t quite remember how I came across Meghan’s blog, Mustard and Sage. I do know it’s a daily read. I find myself saying, more often than not, I really love that, to whatever it was she posted. The great thing about the blogging community is not the daily inspiration, it’s the community that is created by all these like minded individuals. Individuals I would have never known had it not been for this little space. I kinda love that. Not only has Meghan given me some great tips on moving to Portland, she just moved from North Carolina to San Francisco, after talking more, we found out we both lived in Knoxville, Tennessee at the same time. Knoxville isn’t a big city either. So when it came time to finding a creative type for this week’s music post, she seemed the perfect fit. Thanks Meghan for participating, love your mix. Be sure to stop by Mustard and Sage and say hello.

weekend : hello august

Monday, August 2nd, 2010
Photos: Clockwise from top left. Easy E showing off his soon to be famous smirk. Our blackberries are almost ready to pick. Bottomless blood orange mimosas at Root Down. My sidekick, Winston.

Can you believe it’s already August? Where did July go? This weekend was pretty incredible despite the lack of photos (all from my phone). Jevan got in town Wednesday night and we’ve been celebrating since he arrived. We saw Inception and wow, it is really that good. We even smuggled in homemade popcorn that I topped with Parmesan and Tabasco. Also good.

Friday was making the rounds with friends. Starting with coffee with Tracy and Elliott (see cute kid above), lunch with Jevan’s old coworkers and then dinner at D’Corazon (a favorite Mexican spot in Denver) with a handful of friends and the Rockies v. Cubs game. Saturday AM our friends Adam and Jenna made a breakfast reservation on the patio at Root Down. To cure our Friday night fun we drank bottomless blood orange mimosas and wasted away the afternoon poolside. An inflatable pool counts, right?

Saturday night, I had a bunch of girls over for BYOS. Bring Your Own Skewer. We cooked food outdoors and enjoyed the evening. And yesterday we actually got some work done AND some packing. The weekend ended with Supper Club Hawaiian style. We feasted on li hing mui mango, Paige’s incredible ribs, Meggan’s mai tais complete with umbrellas, mac salad, kalua pig and Jess’ light coconut custard sprinkled with toasted coconut and macadamia nuts. I still have a food baby this morning.

I’m off to drop Jevan at the airport and then an afternoon of meetings but I’ll catch back up with you tomorrow.  This is the first week of my spending hiatus. While I’m not cutting out sugar and wine, as evident above, because I’m pretty sure I’ll need both for packing and moving, I am planning to cut back. Or at least give it a good ol’ try. How was your weekend?

summer playlist : no tuff sharks

Friday, July 30th, 2010

This Friday’s mix is by my gal Meghan. She’s a Portland friend and someone I’m excited to see on a more regular basis once I move. Each time Jevan and I visit, she’s usually the brains behind all things gastronomic and never ceases to amaze me with her latest vinyl finds. Not only is she great in the food and music department she is also an apparel designer over at Adidas. Maybe you’ve heard of them?

Meg is a constant source of inspiration and her summer mix is not to be missed. No Tuff Sharks was inspired by one of her favorite west coast artists, Jay Howell, her current obsession with 60′s California and all things Beach Boys-esque. It’s perfect listening for your next beach bonfire (sorry Colorado) or maybe it will inspire you to have your own beach party in the backyard. Enjoy your weekend and the mix. Can you believe it’s the last Friday in July? I can’t. The summer always goes entirely too fast.

Todd Richardson

Two years ago had you told me I would be following people I’ve never met on twitter, I would have bet against you. And felt confident in winning. Because, why exactly would I want to follow someone I’ve never met? Unless it’s say, Tina Fey or maybe Conan O’Brien? I could make just a few exceptions because somehow that makes a little more sense to me.

Let me be the first to say, someone should have made that bet because I would have lost. And that’s how I know today’s summer music mixer, Todd Richardson. He’s my internet friend. Weird, I know. We’ve never met, if we passed one another on the street we wouldn’t know it, we live in very different cities, but, and I stress, BUT, we both love photography and music. And that’s how I came across Todd, through his photography. I posted on his Paris series last winter.  It made me immediately want to pack up and move to Paris. We’ve been friends ever since.

So be sure to check out Todd’s amazing photography and his inspiring tumblr too. You can even follow him on twitter if you like. And last, be sure to enjoy his summer mix. It’s best listened to during those hours between sunset and sunrise preferably near the water or on a rooftop patio with a good summery cocktail in hand and 5 of your best friends. Have a wonderful weekend my friends.

style muse : grace kelly

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

How was your weekend? It was a ridiculous heat wave around these parts. I wish I had a pool or a beach to jump in to cool off. I should probably work on that because it’s not really cooling off. With beach on the brain, I thought of these photos of Grace Kelly looking relaxed and casual on a beach vacation in Jamaica taken in 1955. Isn’t she a perfect style muse? I love these photos because how often does a princess look so, for lack of a better word, unprincess-like? Does she remind you of a certain Mad Men cast member, maybe it’s just me?

leadville 50

leadville 50Wells finishing the Leadville 50.

mountain bikes

emily and paulAverie Grace – 2 weeks

The weekend was pretty spectacular despite the heat. While I can’t legitimately complain because Colorado’s temperatures never compare to the heat and the humidity in the South, I think it’s all in what you are accustomed too. And let me tell you, I’m not comfortable with this heat. Let me rephrase. I’m not good in the heat. It drains me and has a tendency to make me slow and, dare I say crabby? So to beat the heat, I tried to keep myself entertained in the shade and out of the city as much as possible. Friday night, I feasted on Mexican and giant margs with a bunch of girlfriends and then moved to the Forest Room 5 for iced beverages on their patio.

Saturday AM I headed up to Leadville (2 mile high city) with my girlfriend Karlin and our pups, Winston and Max. We tried our best to be the sag wagon for Wells, Kar’s husband, during his grueling 50 mile mountain bike race in Leadville. Yes, you heard that right, 50 miles on a mountain bike. Wells did stellar and finished quicker than his previous times, Karlin packed a fun little picnic for us and I escaped 98 degree heat in the city. Plus we got to stare at guys, and girls, in impeccable shape. Now that’s inspiring. It was a win win kind of day.

Sunday morning, I joined my girlfriend Jenna for a hike. I don’t know about you, but I’m not much of a hiker. I get bored and would rather just go for a run to get some exercise. With that in mind, Jenna convinced me to hike Chautauqua with her. She said it’s fast, shady and an intense workout. She was right, it was a one hour climb up stone steps to the top and then back down again. I won’t lie, I’m a little stiff this morning.

After the hike, I stopped by to meet the newest addition to the world, little Averie Grace. Check out that blond fuzzy hair. So cute. Last night ended with a BBQ over at Beau and Meggan’s place. BBQ was complete with Bacon Blue Cheese Sliders and Curry Turkey Sliders with Granny Smith apple chunks, sprouts, cream cheese and jalapeno jam and roasted potatoes. Yum. I made this Gingered Carrot Chilled Soup with Avocado and Karlin made a delish chopped salad. It was the perfect way to end a weekend.
