Hi friends, Jennifer from I Art U is on her way to NYC and asked me to contribute this week. I used travel as inspiration and put together a mix that’s mellow and good for sitting on an airplane. Click on over to give it a listen.

Thanks again Jennifer. Safe travels.

summer mix | going going gone

Can anyone else believe summer is winding down? I hate saying this but I feel like it was just getting going here in Portland. I guess that’s the case with most summers here, before you blink they are over and done with. For 20 something years, my summers were spent in the South. That means hot and sweaty and tons of time on the water. No matter how hard I try to tell myself it’s been summer (and how much I love a mild summer and not sweating the moment I walk out the door) it has been engrained in my mind that a true summer should be damn near miserable. I always tell people, I have to be tired of summer to be ready for winter.

Going, Going, Gone is inspired by the Labor Day holiday and hot sunny days. We listen to a lot of older funk and soul in the workshop, it’s good music to work along to. While the entire mix isn’t funk or soul, all the songs have a soulful sound, some new, a lot old. Together, these songs make me think of hot summer days, drinking a perfect cocktail and lounging with a great crew of friends. Enjoy the rest of your summer as it’s winding down. I hope you enjoyed all the mixes, I’ve had a great time getting to see each mix come together and how different they have all been.

summer mix | snake whiskey hangover by mrs. wriff

Remember my pal Meghan? She made this beach-y mix last year. She’s always one to come through with a creative, original summer mix full of tunes I’ve never heard of. And this mix is no exception. Here’s what she said about it.

So, as far as the music goes, I have been traveling a lot over the past year, and travel is always so inspiring for delving into new and different types of music. The mix is mostly inspired by not one but two trips to Asia in the past 6 months. I have been listening to a lot of Indonesian and Thai rock. In the era of the Beatles and the Stones, that music reached people all over the world, inspiring some really cool rock bands from all corners of the earth to pick up a guitar and rock. I love the mix of western rock/garage and traditional sounds from the local culture all mashed together. I hope you like it too!

summer mix | natural high by afton from freckle farm

I have yet to meet Afton, this week’s mix maker, in person but by the name of her blog, Freckle Farm, I’m pretty sure we share at least one thing in common, freckles. There’s safety in numbers when it comes to freckles. Not quantity of freckles, but number of people who have them. At least I think so. My brother has them too and we would always roll our eyes whenever someone would tell us our freckles were angel kisses or ask if we knew how many we had.

Like most talented people I know in Portland, Afton has her hand in multiple pots. She is a designer, illustrator and art director. She also writes for Freckle Farm a lifestyle and personal blog. And she put together this great mix for us. Here’s what she said about the mix. Natural High is a compilation of some of the best driving songs from our road trip. I think it’s also perfect for sitting on a front porch and taking in the warm summer weather. Thanks for the mix Afton and enjoy your weekend, folks.

summer mix | matt at wood & faulk

Photo: by Matt

Although Tuesday was the first official day of summer, I consider anytime after Memorial Weekend summer territory. Summer, and I use that word loosely, in Portland so far has been more like Spring and this mix title Chilly Summer is perfectly fitting. Matt from Wood & Faulk put together a great mix of music inspired by the weather that will ease us well into fall.

Matt is no one trick pony either, he has a full array of handcrafted wares. You’ll be impressed by his handmade DIY folding Tripod Camp Stool for Design Sponge and floored by his simple, yet beautiful maple salt cellar. He doesn’t stop there, so check out his Northwesterner Series of canvas bags. I’m constantly impressed. While you’re enjoying his mix, be sure to check out his blog, Wood & Faulk, a journal on craft and experimentation. Thanks again Matt, for contributing.

Caroline is quite the diverse gal. Aside from making a great mix for us, she’s a bit of a maker. She has a series on her blog each week, Make It Happen Monday, where she posts things she made the prior week. A lot of times it stationary but you never know what she might come up with come Monday. She’s also a wiz a putting together a beautiful bouquet. Definitely a talent not everyone possesses. So be sure to check out her blog and say hello. She’s one of the friendliest people I’ve met. You’ll also be inspired by all the lovely handiwork.

summer mix | kate miss beach mix

Red lipstick and necklaces are my go to accessories. Which is probably what first drew me to Kate and her blog, For Me, For You. She is always sporting the best lip color or non color, and she makes and sells these intricately, simple hand woven necklaces and bracelets from time to time. You have to get on her mailing list because they sell out in about 24 hours. Aside from the great lipstick choices and handmade neckwear, what really sold me on Kate, are her photos. She often uses real film that she takes to have developed each week, you don’t need me to tell me that’s a rarity. Her photos have this quiet nostalgic quality to them and make me want to jump right in her weekend. Especially that beach photo shown above.

Kate made this mix that I’ve been listening to all week. Here’s what she said about it. This is a mix to listen to for a hot summer day at the beach. On the way to the beach, on the beach, and then the songs slow down for the ride home. Bare feet dug into the sand required for listening.

Have you met Kelly? I’m sure you have, as she’s quite famous in the design blogging world. You see, she has this fantastic design blog, Design Crush. She is regularly tracking down the most current and amazing design finds and when she’s not, she sports a full time job at Hester Designs and is mom to two kitties and a pup. And she even took the time to make this mix for me, and you! When you get a second, stop by Design Crush and say hi to Kelly, she’s really friendly! summer mix | grazing in the grass

Photography: Girl in Field by Matt Schwartz

Is anyone else shocked that it’s almost summer? It so doesn’t feel like summer here in Portland. It’s rainy and 50′s. Definitely not what I think of summer. To kick off this unseasonal like weather, maybe a mix inspired by warmer days will help. Last year I invited a number of friends, bloggers and creatives around the country to make a mix that feels like summer to them. I loved each week getting a new mix and decided to do it again this year. Beginning today through Labor Day weekend in September, I’ll have a brand new mix up on the blog. All inspired by front porch sitting, cocktail drinking, beach relaxing and road tripping summers. The essentials of summer.

This first mix is from the talented and inspiring Jennifer. You see, Jennifer is my kind of people. Not only is she a wiz at putting together a summery mix, she’s a textile designer in NYC by day (would love to see more of that) and writes for Luster, a lifestyle and design based blog, by night. So hop on over and check out her great blog and be sure to download her mix. It’s a big mix and perfect for whatever you may be doing this holiday weekend. Enjoy!
