summer mix | going going gone

Can anyone else believe summer is winding down? I hate saying this but I feel like it was just getting going here in Portland. I guess that’s the case with most summers here, before you blink they are over and done with. For 20 something years, my summers were spent in the South. That means hot and sweaty and tons of time on the water. No matter how hard I try to tell myself it’s been summer (and how much I love a mild summer and not sweating the moment I walk out the door) it has been engrained in my mind that a true summer should be damn near miserable. I always tell people, I have to be tired of summer to be ready for winter.

Going, Going, Gone is inspired by the Labor Day holiday and hot sunny days. We listen to a lot of older funk and soul in the workshop, it’s good music to work along to. While the entire mix isn’t funk or soul, all the songs have a soulful sound, some new, a lot old. Together, these songs make me think of hot summer days, drinking a perfect cocktail and lounging with a great crew of friends. Enjoy the rest of your summer as it’s winding down. I hope you enjoyed all the mixes, I’ve had a great time getting to see each mix come together and how different they have all been.

summer mix | snake whiskey hangover by mrs. wriff

Remember my pal Meghan? She made this beach-y mix last year. She’s always one to come through with a creative, original summer mix full of tunes I’ve never heard of. And this mix is no exception. Here’s what she said about it.

So, as far as the music goes, I have been traveling a lot over the past year, and travel is always so inspiring for delving into new and different types of music. The mix is mostly inspired by not one but two trips to Asia in the past 6 months. I have been listening to a lot of Indonesian and Thai rock. In the era of the Beatles and the Stones, that music reached people all over the world, inspiring some really cool rock bands from all corners of the earth to pick up a guitar and rock. I love the mix of western rock/garage and traditional sounds from the local culture all mashed together. I hope you like it too!

summer mix | marfa music mix by joslyn of simple lovely

This week’s music post is by the illustrious Joslyn from Simple Lovely. Joslyn never ceases to impress me with her go get em attitude. It seems, every time I check out her blog, she is always up to something new. Case in point, Operation Simplicity and Raising Foodies. Her blog, Simple Lovely is honest, witty and all about the things she loves, including her darling daughters. She and her family are road tripping to Marfa this week. This is what she said about the mix. When Bryan and I go on long car trips with the girlies, we try and create special mixes that sort of cement the experience in our mind.  This was my inspiration as I pulled this together!

summer mix | summer nights and bar fights by tiandra cummins

kid collective summer mix

Spend a little time with my gal Tiandra and you’ll be all the better for it. She’ll teach you how to make biscuits over a camp fire, show you how to tie a figure 8 knot and charm the pants off of just about any snake you come across (I’ve seen her do all 3). She also puts together a surly summer mix. It’s perfect for those last few warm nights of sitting outside, preferably around a fire, and definitely sipping on some whiskey. Don’t let this tough edge fool you though, she’s just about one of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet. You know, the one you want on your side when you get in a bar fight.

summer mix | at the lake by erin from butter and brass

butter and brass summer mix

Have you met Erin? Her blog, Butter and Brass is the golden colored ticket to my heart. Somehow in this world of tumbrs and pinners and rebloggers, she blogs the very best and most under blogged things on the internet, but, yep there’s a but, she’s great at other things too. Like making fig and goat cheese crostinis and photographing them like she spent years working for Gourmet. Or pulling together a wardrobe of all items on sale (hells yeah).

For this week’s mix, I have a confession. In my normal world, I listen to the mixes I post before the post runs. Not once, but I listen to them multiple times. I enjoy doing this. It gives me a sense of the mix and a little background behind the mix maker. This week I haven’t listened to the mix. Since we moved, we’re still without an internet connection. And of course, while I was planning to write this post yesterday over lunch, my laptop started giving me the flashing the question mark folder. So I’m at the apple store, with a fixed computer and scamming on their wireless. Shameless, yep, that’s how I roll. I also want you to know how excited I am to download this mix and listen, because, like her blog, I’m sure it will be really good and make you want to head out to the lake, right about now.

Download At the Lake and visit Butter and Brass.

summer mix | natural high by afton from freckle farm

I have yet to meet Afton, this week’s mix maker, in person but by the name of her blog, Freckle Farm, I’m pretty sure we share at least one thing in common, freckles. There’s safety in numbers when it comes to freckles. Not quantity of freckles, but number of people who have them. At least I think so. My brother has them too and we would always roll our eyes whenever someone would tell us our freckles were angel kisses or ask if we knew how many we had.

Like most talented people I know in Portland, Afton has her hand in multiple pots. She is a designer, illustrator and art director. She also writes for Freckle Farm a lifestyle and personal blog. And she put together this great mix for us. Here’s what she said about the mix. Natural High is a compilation of some of the best driving songs from our road trip. I think it’s also perfect for sitting on a front porch and taking in the warm summer weather. Thanks for the mix Afton and enjoy your weekend, folks.

summer mix | summer or die by nicole from house of leaves

kid-collective-summer-mix

Summer or Die pretty much sums up the summer in Portland thus far. We are aching for summer here in the NW. Not to complain because I know half the country is in a heat wave but I could use one or two days above a spring-y 75 degrees. I won’t even complain if it hits 95. Not once, I promise.

This week’s mix is from Nicole from House of Leaves. Nicole and I work together making leather goods for Tanner. She is definitely the fashionista around the workshop keeping us all on our fashion toes, so to speak. Her blog is a great mix of her thrifted finds (she’s the best thrifter I know) and designer pieces any gal would be lucky to come across. Nicole is off to NYC the rest of the week for vacation and a little break from the workshop, but I can assure you, she’ll be back with plenty of inspiration and ready to share what she found. Thanks for the great mix Nicole, hopefully listening to this is like doing a rain dance for summer in the NW.

summer mix | mossy memories by jevan from tanner goods

CASEY KEASLER PHOTOGRAPHYPhoto: Casey Keasler

That’s a long title for needing little introduction. You all know Jevan is my main squeeze. But do you know he puts together a great summer mix? Call me partial but I’m still listening to the one he made 2 years ago. And I can tell you, this one is likely a mix you’ll listen to again and again.

Like many other Portlanders, Jevan wears a hat or two. He is busy launching a line of snowboarding outerwear called Homeschool Snowboarding that premieres this fall. Watch for it. Outside the snowboarding industry, he heads up sales and is partner at Tanner Goods. I like to joke that he is also my manager. When he isn’t snowboarding or slinging leather goods, he gives me editorial advice, spell checks and marketing ideas. And on top of that, puts together one great summer mix. Enjoy and have a great weekend, folks.

summer mix | summer kind of wonderful by jessica of destined to design

Meeting an internet friend face to face for the very first time is not unlike a first date. Lots of thoughts can rush through your mind like, will we have things to talk about, will it be weird and most importantly, will I recognize her from that tiny twitter profile photo or will we be waiting at the bar side by side and not even realize it. Ok, so probably not the latter, but you get that first date feeling, right? Fortunately, when I met up with Jessica while I was in LA for Dwell on Design, we did recognize one another and had plenty to chat about.

Along with being an interior designer, Jessica is an all around design maven. She works for a great design firm, co-launched one of my favorite online lifestyle magazines, Collected, photographs interiors, and still has time to post to her personal blog, Destined to Design. You better believe she can put together a great summer mix. I’ve been listening to this one on repeat. There are some old favorites and new to me songs too. So be sure to grab this mix and go get inspired over on Jessica’s blog. Have a great weekend folks.

summer mix | not all who wander are lost by elise from pennyweight

kid-collective-summer-mix-pennyweightCover photo by Jake Stangel.

I’m not sure you know it, I’m a Tennessee native. I lived there for 22 years. While it’s been some time since I spent any longer than a week in the state, it holds a special place in my heart and always will. Because of those 22 years, I feel a kinship to just about anyone from the state. Maybe it’s because I rarely meet someone from there all the way on the west coast. You see, people in Tennessee, they stick to Tennessee, it’s that good folks.

When I came across Elise’s blog, Pennyweight, I was immediately a fan. Not only is her header illustrated by Alyson Fox, not a Tennessean but a Texan and a long time favorite artist of mine, she has a perfectly curated vintage shop, Troubadour Vintage. When I found out Elise is from Tennessee, that kinship rule kicked in. I’m pretty sure my next trip to the great state will involve meeting Elise and some vintage shopping too. Because after following her Pinterest, I found not only do we share a home state, we also share a love of all things design.

Enjoy her summer mix and enjoy your weekend. It’s a long one here, I’ll catch back up with you on Tuesday with a recap, we’re camping and it’s finally summer in Portland. Thanks for making a great mix, Elise!
