lauren bucquet – a day in the life 03

The last time I was in NYC, Lauren and I officially met. It was a little over a year ago and Jevan and I were dragging my parents around the Meatpacking District desperately trying to find the Rag & Bone sample sale while she was working. That’s right, she’s a designer for the brand, lucky girl, I know. Just so you don’t think I stalk people, I should let you know I’ve known her parents for a handful of years and briefly played soccer with her sister Katie, who now has twins, congrats Katie! With Lauren living in New York and my trips to the city being few and far between we never had much of an opportunity to meet. But through her mom, I always felt like I had a friend with lots of things in common. Aren’t moms great like that?! A couple of months ago Lauren and I were chatting on facebook about blogs. I know she’s super creative and I wanted to see her perspective on things. Via our brainstorms, A Day in the Life evolved into a real post.

It takes a lot of work, dedication, patience and talent to make it in the fashion industry. I think you’ll see Lauren’s eye and appreciate her perspective. I know she’s going to do big things. And, if we’re lucky, maybe she will let me put together a post on her jewelry line. Lauren, thanks for taking time out of your busy life to put this post together. I love seeing your day, I’m sure others will too. And here’s how it begins.

Senior Menswear/Footwear Designer – Rag & Bone

7:00 AM Wake up to the soothing sounds of NPR and the meows of my hungry kitty, arrgh….

8:15 AM Grab my bag and rush downstairs to hop on my bike. I head from my apartment in Clinton Hill to my office in the Meatpacking district via the Manhattan Bridge. A great way to wake up and start the day!

9:15 AM Knitwear review and Design Team Meeting… time to review the Fall women’s line to decide what stays and what goes… a very long (but fun) meeting done sitting on our bean bags in the back corner of the office….

11:00 AM to around 12:45 or so…. Sketching, developing concepts for Fall…. Lots to do…. emailing, catching up on specs…. sketching…. getting hungry….

1:00 PM Walk up to Chelsea Market to grab lunch. Today’s pick: Lobster Place spicy shrimp roll, yum! Enjoying the totally creepy Halloween decorations at Chelsea Market while walking through….. Decide to eat outside the office today on the bright yellow steel picnic tables in front of the (semi-new) Standard Hotel with my coworkers, Heesung and Emily, finally it’s not raining in New York!

2:00 PM Fabric Selection Meeting…. Time to edit the thousands and thousands of headers we received during our recent trip to Paris. This is fun, but can also be very daunting trying to hone in on the perfect fabrics when they’re all so cool!…. We’re about half way though at this point….

4:00 PM Tea Time! This is a design team daily ritual at rag & bone, lady grey and biscuits every afternoon… best part of the day. We get our Tea from Tea and Sympathy. The order usually involves McVities Chocolate Caramel Digestives and Tate and Lyle Ginger Creme Biscuits and we drink Twinings Lady Grey Tea with milk. If you are ever in the neighborhood be sure to check out, Tea and Sympathy, it’s super cute.

7:00 PM Finish out the work day sketching, pulling trims, trying to keep everything together!

8:00 PM Cycle back to Brooklyn and meet up with my lovely friend, Julia, for a night of Top Chef, Chinese food, red wine and pumpkin carving! Of course, we get all prepped for pumpkin carving, sketch our ideas onto the pumpkins… only to realize that the pumpkins we’ve purchased are just about as hard as rocks and terribly difficult to carve… so much so that Julia’s beautiful knife manages to snap at the tip! We sadly gave up, but still managed to enjoy our wine and Top Chef season six.

11:00 PM Head home to be greeted by Adam and the kitty. Make tea and relax for a bit…. then, it’s time for sleep.

I always thought that there would be great energy between you and Lauren. It’s too bad you live so far apart. As her Mom, it still makes me nervous that she rides her bike from Brooklyn to Manhattan!

  3. Beth says:

Wish I was there, too…stop by the Chelsea Pines & tell ‘em I said hello.
