the-xx

I haven’t posted music in a few weeks so I thought I would share what I’ve been listening to lately. The xx, from the UK. They are on tour now and most of the US shows are in November. Check them out if you have a second.

korcula, croatia – island life

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Korcula Town is a small island about three hours bus ride (including ferry) from Dubrovnik. It’s streets are made of marble and the architecture is Renaissance and Gothic. The town layout is different from any I have explored. The streets have a fish-bone plan  that were ingeniously designed for comfort and safety. The western streets are straight, to open the city to the summer maestral (strong, steady westerly wind). The eastern streets are curved, to minimize the force of the winter bura (cold northeasterly wind). Korcula is a place I could enjoy for a while.

This area is known for wind surfing. I thought this boat and wind surfer were going to crash. It was a close call.

The spot where my camera fumbling and breaking took place.

Octopus Salad and beer. I needed a beer and a bite to appease my camera breaking spirits. We had the freshest seafood all along the Adriatic. I can never tire of seafood.

Architecture. Simple and ornate.

Self portrait. A staple when traveling as a pair. This one, I actually like. Usually, one of us has a triple chin, closed eyes or is only half way in the photo. At least I’m 2/3 of the way.

I don’t know about you, but half the time I pick a wine, it’s because of it’s label. No excuses when you mispronounce these phonetically spelled bottles by Caroline Gilroy.

“I have designed a new range of Australian wines. The concept behind Vee-Noh! is pronunciation. I have worked in the hospitality industry for a few years and am always amused how people pronounce certain wines, often incorrectly. I believe I have developed a cheeky solution.”

I wasn’t planning to share much from a recent trip Jevan and I took to Croatia and Turkey. It’s not that I didn’t have fun or want to share. It’s that, well, I broke the camera. I’m such a klutz when it comes to being stealth. Ok, I’m a klutz in general. Add stealth into the picture and it only gets worse. This time, I dropped the camera while trying to catch a shot of old men fishing, in their speedo, non-the-less. Wanna see me blush, well I did. Just so you don’t completely write me off, I did get the shot, only it’s on my phone. Better than nothing, right? Fortunately we brought along our polaroid too, I’ll try to scan and post some of those too.

IMG_0495Boats. Lots of boats and water on this trip. Not ever a bad thing.

IMG_0514Dubrovnik is surrounded by a wall. One you can walk the perimeter of. A must if you are ever there. This is one of the many views from the wall.

IMG_0529This is another view of the wall. Did I tell you Dubrovnik is sandwiched between a hillside and the Adriatic? The wall was built between the 13th and 16th century.

IMG_0488My dream car lives in Dubrovnik. Since I’m dreaming, I could live without the burgundy.

IMG_0542All time favorite beach bar, Buza. And by beach, I mean cliff. Probably the most romantic bar to watch the sun set from.

when I found out there’s a new online magazine called Lonny. As I’m slow to posting, I’m sure you have already read through most, if not all of it. I quickly flipped through when I first got the news. I can’t wait to have more time to go through it again. Lonny was co-created by Domino editors, Michelle Adams and partner Patrick Cline, and was named for London and New York. I’ve pulled together a few of my favorite vignettes. Be sure to check it out in the full screen version.

I came across these photos of Grace Kelly and just had to share. She seems so natural and so glamorous at the same time. So casual yet so elegant. These photos were taken during a trip to Jamaica with her sister back in 1955.

I especially love the beach scenes.
