Tuesday, September 29th, 2009I’m working on an exciting project at the moment and thought I would share a few tidbits for the master bath. Fiddlehead Designs out of Denver, CO has some of the best concrete out there. Their mix is over 80% recycled content and they replace 30% of their portland cement with flyash.
Don’t you just love this sink? It’s called the mini ramp.

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009for the love of homes
Monday, September 28th, 2009Homes have always made a huge impression on me. This is likely one of the reasons I am an interior designer today. When everything is just right, homes have this incredible character that take on a life of their own. Only adding to those who live inside. Think I’m crazy yet?
The first home, and I say home in the loosest of terms, that made an impression on me was the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina. I was young, in elementary school I think, and it was the biggest, most elaborately decorated home with the most incredible garden I had ever had the opportunity to walk through. It didn’t hurt that within was the family’s own private bowling alley. Years later and as my taste and style developed, I had the chance to visit one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s homes on a work trip to Grand Rapids, MI. I was invited to not only tour but to dine at the Meyer May House. The house was painstakingly restored to it’s original character including furniture, artwork and china. During the entire dinner, I was so afraid I would spill wine on the linens or break one of the original pieces of china we were eating from that I probably didn’t enjoy it as much as I could have.
More recently Jevan and I took a quick trip to the San Diego area to visit his family, surf, and drive up to LA to see a show at the Hollywood Bowl. Normally when we travel, we try to make the rounds and see as much of everything and everyone as we can cram into one trip. While on the trip we stayed one night with his favorite cousin Jora, her husband Bryan and their two kids C-man and Juju. Rumor had it they had a house I would fall head over heals for. I was skeptical, but excited to catch up with Jora and meet Juju for the first time.
Let me tell you how wrong I was to be skeptical. This house, originally featured in Sunset Magazine’s 1966 issue was the epitome of cool, casual California. You know, gorgeous without looking like you’re trying too hard? Built on a hillside in La Mesa, it takes advantage of the sweeping views through the many outdoor spaces, floor to ceiling glass and open floor plan. Along with the house, the lot boasts an organic veggie garden, chicken coop and a handful of citrus trees. The interior itself is light, open and has a very mid century feel without out being kitschy. While remodeling the house Bryan and Jora contacted the architect to get his seal of approval on the changes and updates. I think, you’ll not only like what you see, you’ll love it. And, the house is once again featured in Sunset Magazine. More photos are available here or pick up a copy of the October issue.

hang 10
Friday, September 25th, 2009
Do surfers still say hang 10? I have no idea. I do know, I’m a horrible surfer. And probably just made it completely obvious by saying hang 10. I end up with more bruises, cuts and salt up my nose than I do actual rides. That’s where The Surf Lodge steps in. I could hang out on any of the patios. For a while. Forget the bruises and the hanging ten. It oozes Southern California laid back casual. And get this, it’s in Montauk. I know. Only 125 miles from NYC.

mayer hawthorne is new soul
Thursday, September 24th, 2009Mayer Hawthorne made his Denver debut at the Larimer Lounge last night and every lady in the house swooned. We all admittedly, were feeling the love. He was there to share and promote his 7″ heart shaped single, Just Aint Gonna Work Out and new album Strange Arrangement. Had I not been there, it would be hard to believe Mayer is a 29 year old white kid from a Detroit burb. His soulful falsetto and lyrics of love lost has him compared to Smokey Robinson and J.Dilla in the same sentence. So forget Motown and all the other comparisons. This is a revival and it’s all about progression. I can’t wait to hear what he comes up with next.

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009end of summer mix
Monday, September 21st, 2009Sadly enough, the 22nd marks the end of summer. This time of year is always bittersweet. On one hand, I’m excited for fall colors, snowboarding and switching out my summer clothes to cooler weather pieces. On the other I’m so not ready for the days to get shorter and temperature cooler. To mark the end of summer Jevan put together a mix. Hopefully it will ease you into your Monday. And the first day of fall. Which is tomorrow. I’m in shock. Hence the pre-school-like sentences. I think you might love it. I know I do.

I thought I should let you know we have tomatoes. Loads of them. Jevan and I picked armfuls last night. And immediately sliced one up, added some salt and pepper and ate it while standing in the kitchen. Still warm from the sun. That’s what I call living.
Now, what to make with all these pretties. Paige, I need your tomato fondu recipe pronto! Any good fresh tomato recipes out there?

And while the the photo below may not look like much more than a pile of dirt, it was such a great surprise. A box of iris bulbs from Onnie’s garden. Onnie is my mom’s mom, not to be confused with Granny, my dad’s mom, in the photo from the post earlier today. Onnie not only has a fabulous grandmother name, she also has an incredible green thumb. Most everything I learned about growing things I learned from her at a very young age. Thankfully some of those lessons carried over. At least I can grow tomatoes. And now, hopefully some white irises.
